Becker 7827 EuropeThis good looking unit has recently had its price slashed by 50 per cent, making it one of the cheapest ways to get your hands on a sat nav unit that boasts European mapping and traffic updates. The 7827 covers 37 European countries and offers both 2D and 3D views along with a full eight-digit postcode search. The unit also comes with Lane Assistant, which alerts you about upcoming lane changes and also has a Reality View feature, which displays motorway signs on the map as they appear in real life, making it easier to get your bearings and find your way. It comes with a safety camera database and features route calculation profiles for cars, trucks, bikes, bicycles and pedestrians.

Garmin Nüvi 205 Traffic UK/Ireland
As its name suggests, the diminutive 205 features comprehensive mapping of the UK and Ireland in a palm-sized package. The smallest unit of our sextet, the 205 doesn’t scrimp on features, with a traffic receiver and lifetime subscription, 3.5-inch touch-screen display and a Mico SD card slot. It comes with a safety camera database, automatic time zone feature and the choice of 2D or 3D views, along with a
built-in travel kit complete with picture viewer. The Digital Elevation Maps display shaded terrain contours, Photo Navigation allows you to download Google Panoramio pictures to the 205 and navigate with them while the Hotfix function helps to decrease satellite acquisition times.

TomTom GO 530 Traffic
TomTom is one of the biggest names in sat nav and this stylish unit is bursting with features. There’s a 4.3-inch touch controlled widescreen display, pre-loaded UK and Republic of Ireland mapping, a traffic receiver with free lifetime traffic updates, free map updates and a text to speech function that announces street names. It also comes with a safety camera database, though you’ll need to pay £19.99 for a 12-month subscription. Other useful navigation features include IQ Routes, which calculates journeys based on real world speeds and Advanced Lane Guidance, which is particularly useful when navigating complicated junctions.

Garmin Nüvi 760 Traffic
This unit has plenty of useful features wrapped up in a handsome case. The 760 features full European mapping, with a lifetime subscription to its traffic information service as well as a free 30-day subscription for the pre-loaded safety camera database. It has a sunlight readable widescreen 4.3-inch touch operated display with an easy to use interface, multiple route calculation and full postcode search. It also has a battery life of up to six hours, an integrated FM transmitter and built-in Bluetooth hands-free calling, allowing you to use the unit’s integrated microphone and speakers to answer calls.

TomTom GO 730 Traffic
The next unit up from the 530, the 730 features everything that its cheaper sibling does but adds full Western and Eastern European mapping, making it perfect for drivers who enjoy frequent jaunts to the Continent. As before, there’s a large, easy to use touch-screen display and the extremely useful IQ Routes and Advanced Lane Guidance. Other features it shares with the 530 include TomTom’s enhanced positioning technology, which uses movement and gravity sensors to calculate your car’s position when there’s no GPS signal available. You can also store MP3s on the unit and transmit them to your car stereo using the built-in FM transmitter.

TomTom GO 930 Traffic
This is it, the top of the range sat nav unit from TomTom and it’s quite the heavy hitter. It’s quite a jump in price over the 730 but in addition to full European maps, the 930 also includes US and Canada maps, making it invaluable for travellers who spend a lot of time in the States behind the wheel of a car. To differentiate it from its siblings, TomTom has given the 930 a rather sexy all-black case and it also comes with a remote control for added ease of use. As before, it’s packed with the same advanced features as its cheaper counterparts including full postcode search and an automatic night mode.
